I’m pretty sure that nobody does anything with the intent of being mediocre.
In fact, most of us want to be the best at whatever it is we do… at least that was how I was raised. My mother would always say, “Even if you’re going to be a street sweeper, I know you can be the best street sweeper out there.”
And yet, far too often we go out give it our best and if our efforts aren’t recognized in the timeframe we deem appropriate, we get discouraged and slack.
But what about those who go out and give it their best just because that is what’s expected of them? Those folks who just keep plugging along and striving for excellence because at the end of the day, they get satisfaction out of just knowing that they gave it their all and that there isn’t a speck of dust on that doorstep?
Well, I can assure you that eventually, those efforts to get recognized and rewarded. What’s more, those fruits of success are that much sweeter knowing that you’re motivated by doing the job right and that somebody happened to notice how fantastic you are at what you do.
The key is not to ever doubt your ability to hold your own in whatever you do.
Up against the likes of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Melissa McCarthy didn’t think she had a snowball’s chance of taking home an Emmy. But low and behold, the comedienne took home the trophy and as she took to the mic and told the audience how she hadn’t prepared a speech, I was struck by the fact that she could have underestimated her efforts to such an extent.
So as you face the day and give it your all, I encourage you not to get discouraged and know that your moment of recognition will come. So just keep on keeping on and get ready ‘cause your time in the sun is on its way!
